Oh, the Colonnades!

Written on the anniversary of the raiding of Corisinth by The Pirate King

“Oh, the colonnades!” cried out the lord
as he watched his town and home fall under siege
because, of all his bridges, hills, and men,
he loved the granite colonnades the most.

“Oh, the colonnades!” roared the knight
as he retreated back inside the wall
because he loved their strong defensive stand.

“Oh, the colonnades!” mourned the artist
as he watched them fall to rams and cannon fire
because he loved them for their Doric crests.

“Oh, the colonnades!” sighed the lord
when he heard the fort had fallen to the pirates
because he loved them for their symbols of power.

“Oh, the colonnades!” cried out the world
because they loved them for their price in gold
but no one mourned the ones who died that day —
the day we lost those lovely colonnades.
