Another solution might be the Patreon-style optional or pay-what-you-want subscription model. Research points to Patreon’s average optional subscription per user being about $5/month, and with a news source like the New York Times sitting at about 1 million digital subscribers, that could equate to about $60 million annually… still only 1/6 of their annual revenue.
Would a freemium model help with that? Would increased readership also increase voluntary subscriptions? I don’t know. Just another idea!
