Changing How We Approach Work, with the Hollywood Collective.
Experimenting with new ways to work, starting with ourselves. It’s work, but fluid…
I’ve become a committed devotee to ideas around work and workplace, notably how we can make them better and where their future lies. As I came to launch My Amazing Team, I realised I‘d created my own opportunity to experiment first hand with these themes and practice what I preach.
At All About People, Oliver Baxter of Herman Miller introduced a range of scenarios for workplace future. You can see his full talk and a whitepaper download over at theAll About People 2014 site(note: nominal fee to login for the full version). One concept that grabbed me was the Hollywood Model of work.
The idea is that instead of working for a single employer under permanent contract on a treadmill of work for them, we could give ourselves the chance to work on one project at a time, always doing something we loved and could input valuably to. After finishing project A, for company B, we can move on to project X, with company Y.
In essence, it’s the heralding of freelancing as a common way of working (where environment and circumstance allows) and called ‘Hollywood’ as that’s the way movie production crews are put together. As a devotee of the benefits of co-working and re-thinking where we work at any given time, this concept is a natural extension and appeals to me greatly. I can see great benefits for productivity, engagement and outcomes, but I equally acknowledge that there’s a debate to be had over where and when this is possible and prudent — I might cover that in a later piece.
Learning about this and other emerging workplace concepts made me realise, that if I’m going to launch a company that tunes in specifically to the individuality, values and personality of customer organisations and their specific issues, I need to have the ability to deliver every piece of work sympathetically to that. So the Hollywood Collective was born.
It’s a group of amazing, talented and unique people I’ve worked with, for, or have worked for me and in turn, their contacts. There’s an endless pool of talent out there and by setting up My Amazing Team to deliver projects (particularly on the MAT Creative side) that are unique to a particular aim within a particular customer, the only way to truly reflect that individuality is by creating the right project team for that specific instance.
In short, every MAT customer will get a tailor made team of the right people, working on the right project, every time. For the collective, they get to work on amazing projects with different perspectives and different people, every time. For me, the variety, excitement and quality add value to my every working day. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.
It’s work, but fluid…
