I fully agree with Hillary on the need to re-imagine the social safety net in this increasingly networked economy; Senator Warner called for this conversation last month in his remarks at the New America Foundation (http://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=gig-economy). Healthcare.gov offers a window into the benefits of freeing workers from “job lock” (something I wrote about as CTO in 2009 — http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2009/12/18/industries-future-weigh-need-health-reform) as more entrepreneurs can pursue the American Dream without risking everything on a bad health condition.

Imagine marketplaces — perhaps public/privately governed — that open up access to worker’s comp, even family leave benefits. It is time to have this conversation. Thanks for moving it forward.
