The Need for Poetry
ANEW exists because there is a need for more poetry in our country. It is a way to introduce people to the poetic and poetics, through poetry and other forms of writing and the art that we consider carry the poetic spirit forward.
We have three major operational components currently. These are:
Anew Print: A small independent press based in Cuttack, Odisha and Bangalore, Karnataka. We publish new work, translations from regional languages and reissues of contemporary classics.
Currently, we have on sale Rajiv Mohabir’s excellent A Veil You’ll Cast Aside. It is a handmade art object; each copy has a unique cover-collage by Biswamit Dwibedy. The poems are translations of Kabir’s poems from and into Indo-Caribbean poetic experiments by Rajiv Mohabir.

This is an experiment as an answer to a need for experiments in creative writing. To think of it beyond and outside the MFA. To make home for conversation through a program that isn’t academic, but does help writers complete a body of work through structure, practice and engagement.
The Anew Writing Program requires six-month of residency and online creative practice each. Students begin with a 10-week orientation program online (to be taken between Sept to Dec), followed by four months in residency. From March-June students create their summer work. In June and July students gather again for another residency period. This is followed by one-on-one guidance from one faculty member and the director to help shape a body of work.
The Anew Library
The Anew Library exists as a resource for the Anew Writing Program and a platform for other publication houses, partners and individuals to show their solidarity with our mission of promoting contemporary experiments in literature in India.

These are three ways in which we are trying to promote the literary arts in India. Our mission is to work as much in collaboration with others in order to renew and revive interests in experimenting with literature and language in India. One way of doing this is by being home to avant-garde books in India and by building conversations around the same.
