It is more than a magazine.
I love design and I love designing Freelancer magazine.
It is always a bit nerve-wracking having a blank page to start with but as soon as I start receiving the copy from the editor Sophie Cross, it has me cooing, laughing or having ahaaa moments (the list of emotions could go on) and I think this is so cool, nerves calmed.
I have a thing when I design magazines — I always have to choose my favourite article. It was the same for The Phoenix issue #5, and like with all my work — before placing the copy on the page, I read the text and then decide on what images can work for the article. I was cooing at the Goats on Zoom feature — yes you read that correctly. Then laughing whilst reading another feature: A Day In The Life of Harry Dry. It continues and I have an ahaaa moment reading — How Do I… Write My About Page?
Then I had another favourite article — Are Freelancers Better Equipped To Handle Change? Written by the brilliant guest editor Penny Brazier.
I also enjoy reading the letters page. It’s so good to hear how freelancing is working out for people.
After the mag has hit the doormats and digested, we are thankful reading the social media posts on how people are enjoying the magazine, now I’m thinking — do I need a favourite article? It’s great hearing about how people have made new friends, maybe taken the freelance leap, pushed themselves to be involved in freelance communities, or attended events because of this 100 paged square-shaped magazine.*
So, in short, I can’t pick an article that I love reading the best because it is more than just a magazine. It is a freelance community, and you can’t pick one area — as we know as freelancers, we are juggling lots of hats.
The magazine is now a year old, we are truly grateful for all the support and kind words — a thousand thank you’s.
If you have not heard or seen the magazine yet, do check it out it also comes with a curated Spotify list by Sophie and Penny — it’s good. Link here.
If you have seen it, do you have a favourite article?
