Are you a freelance writer, designer, or other creative? You may be ignoring your best source of clients.
The gig economy is huge, but if you’re a creative professional, you may be missing some of the benefits. And income.
According to Gallup, “over one-third of US workers (36%) participate in the gig economy, either through their primary or secondary jobs.”
Most of these freelance jobs are local. Think about who’s working gigs in your local area. Consider: delivery drivers, service people, dog groomers…
Your best prospects for creative freelance gigs: local clients
When I coach writers, I encourage them to prospect for clients locally. Yes, you can get hired by companies all over the globe, but local prospects are more likely to hire you.
Some reasons:
- There’s less competition. If you’re a freelance writer for example, chances are good that a marketing manager or a business owner has never worked with any writer before, let alone a local writer.
- You understand the local environment, so you can spot opportunities “foreign” writers (who may live in the next state over) can’t.
- You have more contacts locally.
