I understand you see an issue with the scheduling but you cant fix it for the whole world. There will be scheduling issues, always. As a parent, I find half days not helpful and have had little to no useful input from the exhausted teachers regarding any of my 3 kids. they are forced to do this even if there is no issue, I guess to make parents feel like their child is special. When I had and issue or they needed me, we made it work. That is all I wanted.
I am working close to My community, with my kids only 15 min away. I'm fortunate to work with a group of people who are understanding that my needing to pick up my sick child is not a sign of some substandard work ethic,but my commitment to my children. I have been looked down up on when I would not consider a higher paying job in the big city. That position came with a 1.5 hour commute one way on a good day. I stand firm on my need to raise my kids, take them to their practices and lessons and to to make sure they ate and in bed on time among many other parental privileges.
Having the schools babysit my kids is not appropriate, I dont want them raising my family or teaching my values to them. I think they have their hands full with the basic empowerment through fundamental skills. Being a single parent, I have had times when I needed a little assistance from the after school programs. Anything of quality or stimulating or engaging to our children are hard to come by and are extremely expensive. Some after school program operators have not kept up with the schedules of the schools that they provide support to. It is very troublesome and illogical.
I think more of the work force can be working remotely and quite effectively. The technology exists, we have the tools in our hands everyday. I think employers would benefit form hiring local talent. This will diminish absurd commutes and allow for some flex schedules and other non traditional work schedules. No solution will fit everyone nor should it.
