I went to school in three different cultures and have since taught in six. The U.S. educational system is the worst I’ve seen. And, after watching “reform” after “reform” for sixty years, I’ve come to the conclusion that each one was a deliberate step down, not up. Rockefeller funded what would become Columbia University (which designs educational systems) in 1909. At the celebration dinner, he said, “It shall not be our purpose to educate scientists and philosophers, but a people that shall, willingly, mold itself to our hands.” It seems to me that this policy has backfired badly. When I went to teach at a university in China in 2002, I realized that even back then America was a third world country. In China I saw an emerging infrastructure that far surpasses the U.S. America’s infrastructure is crumbling.
