This is a really great essay on music. Jazz faced similar problems in which musicians like Stan Kenton and Frank Sinatra turned it into something other than music that tries to make girls dance. It was also black musicians Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie that changed jazz as music you listen to while standing up, into music you listen to while sitting down.
