First course of CODING stared for me last week :)
The professors have a very cool research lab at Politecnico di Milano, called DENSITY DESIGN [http://www.densitydesign.org]
it focuses on the visual representation of complex phenomena and they are doing amazing projects!
(take a look on their website)
A Complex Phenomena involves different actors, for example:
migration, it has a lot of inputs that brings to many outputs. It means that there is not just one correct solution.
Visual Representation is the translation of a complex phenomena to make it visual and more understandable. It includes also interactive visualization.
WHAT IS CREATIVE CODING?
creative coding is a type of computer programming in which the goal is to create something expressive instead of something functional
“It is possible to automate operations with coding, in fact code is relevant as a production logic. You can see code as a sketching tool to generate design.” says the professor.
SOME EXAMPLES :
NORDKYN is the name of a peninsula in Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost county.
Based on a new brand strategy and live meteorological data, Design Studio Neue [http://www.neue.no] developed a dynamic logo that changes according to wind and temperature, in the same way the area itself changes with the weather.
IF THE MOOON WERE ONLY 1 PIXEL is a tediously accurate map of the Solar System,
where 1 pixel = 3474.8 km (the diameter of the moon)
“I was talking about the planets with my 5-year-old daughter the other day. I was trying to explain how taking a summer vacation to Mars in the future will be a much bigger undertaking than a trip to Palm Springs (though equally as hot). I kept trying to describe the distance using metaphors like “if the earth was the size of a golf ball, then Mars would be across the soccer field” etc., but I realized I didn’t really know much about these distances, besides the fact that they were really large and hard to understand. Pictures in books, planetarium models, even telescopes are pretty misleading when it comes to judging just how big the universe can be. Are we doing ourselves a disservice by ignoring all the emptiness?
So I thought I would see if a computer screen could help make a map of a solar system that’s a bit more accurate.” Josh Worth
SEVEN DAYS OF CARSHARING
is a project to explore and visualize the ‘Enjoy carsharing service’ in Milan. A series of visual explorations of data collected over the time span of one week, observing the areas of Milan and the time where people drive around the city.
If you think about it, Code is the language of the 21st century!
Every device speaks it. Thinking it will open the door to endless opportunity.
The software we will learn in the course is called p5.js and you can download it for free!
There are many books about processing:
if you click here: generative art
there is a small sample chapter of the book of Matt Pearson
Tomorrow it will be my second lesson of the course… TO BE CONTINUED :)
