I gave a 2.5-month notice to my employer. I had a bullet point list of what I specifically wanted to say, in what order, and how to reply to certain questions. I was very careful with my words; I wanted to control my message.

I skimmed the list and took a deep breath. “I’m moving to San Francisco,” is what I said.

My creative director responded, “Yayyy!” Then she reached for a stapled stack of tabloid-sized paper. Her calendar. Immediately, we began discussing dates. We jumped topics swiftly: her words of advice and encouragement, my ex, succession & workplace dynamics, my family, plans for my other commitments and personal investments, a brief list of reasons why now is the right time.

Chaos. I wanted so badly to control it…

It was Aloha Friday. 4:30pm. I felt free.
