My One-Sided Friendship with John Mayer

I don’t remember when or what exactly it was that led me to find John Mayer. I do remember hearing his hit songs over and over on the radio (Daughters, Your Body is a Wonderland) and not thinking much about them at the time— just more of your average mainstream radio tunes, like Big Yellow Taxi or something by Sheryl Crow. It wasn’t until early high school when I randomly stumbled upon low quality recordings on Limewire of him playing his songs at a bar (you could actually hear glasses clinking and people chatting noisily in the background — obviously before he became known) and fell in love with his words and sound that felt like entering into a late night, deep conversation with a new and unexpected friend.

Thus started the longest relationship of my life. 10 years, baby.

Over the course of time, his songs would be the background music to my different stages of growth, resonating with me while I worked through thoughts and experiences with love, heartbreak, growing up, adulthood, and sometimes faith. It’d also accompany me on the lighter times— road trips while singing alone or with friends, at a friend’s house listening to them learn Comfortable chords, on a plane waiting for takeoff, cooking dinner with a loved one.

His sound evolved and experimented with different styles over the years. For a while he delved into country and folk themes but the heart was the same. Just as we do when we’re experiencing new stages in life and exploring different parts of ourselves that we didn’t know were there — while trying to balance how to express that side in a way that stays true to who we are. Which simply comes down to being honest about it and to ourselves. A good heart asking the right questions on this journey of life, and for me, I’m just glad to be sitting shotgun to hear about it.

I realize this sounds crazy. Anyway, his summer concert tour tickets go on sale in a week and so I thought I’d reflect on my experience with this guy and compile a few of my favorite songs and lyrics on here as I wait. Crossing my fingers that I can snag one without depleting my life’s savings, even if I’m not really a concert person.

My favorite John Mayer songs of all time:

  • Clarity
  • Why Georgia
  • In Your Atmosphere
  • Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
  • New Deep
  • Stop This Train
  • I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)
  • No Such Thing
  • Back To You

’Cause I’d die if I saw you
I’d die if I didn’t see you there

So I don’t think I’m gonna go to LA anymore

Wherever I go whatever I do
I wonder where I am in my relationship to you
Wherever you go whatever you are
I watch your life play out and take pictures from afar

In Your Atmosphere Lyrics

I worry, I weigh three times my body

By the time I recognize this moment
This moment will be gone
But I will bend the light, pretend that it somehow lingered on

And I will waste no time
Worried ‘bout no rainy weather
And I will waste no time
Remaining in our lives together

Clarity Lyrics

Something about you
Its just the way you move
The way you move me

Doesn’t it scare you
Your will is not as strong
As it used to be

Back To You Lyrics

Who do you love?
Girl, I see through, through your love
Who do you love?
Me or the thought of me?
Me or the thought of me?

Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through

I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You) Lyrics

I just found out there’s no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you’ve got to rise above

No Such Thing Lyrics
