Thank you for the flowers

You bring me a bouquet of buds

At least I didn’t bring seeds, you say

I roll my eyes and put them in a vase of water

Hands together, we go for a walk in the park

Days later after you are gone

These tight clusters, once curled up and shy, awaken in full bloom, eager to soak in the light

The bashful sunflower uncovers its face and spreads its tiny yellow hands

The sugarplum rose bud unfolds its layered skirts to the breeze

The tight-lipped lilies crinkle open to reveal their secret color inside

After they have taken their last breaths and dried

You are back,

with more buds. And I am in love with this never ending spring.
