Annenberg Community Beach House

--

The Annenberg Community Beach House In Santa Monica CA is located on 5 acres of oceanfront property along Santa Monica State Beach. This historic beach facility combines elements of the historic Marion Davies Estate and new amenities, creating a unique community destination that is open to all with no membership required. The site features spectacular views, a splash pad, children’s play area, historic pool, and Marion Davies Guest House.

The story of the Annenberg Community Beach House began in the 1920s when William Randolph Hearst constructed a one-time private estate for Marion Davies. The estate served as a luxury hotel and the Sand & Sea Club, a members-only beach club that operated for decades. After the club closed in 1989, the City of Santa Monica began a process to re-envision the site’s role as a public gathering space.

In 1998, the City adopted a reuse plan to turn the site into a year-round community gathering space. The City then commissioned an extensive community input process to develop a visionary use for the facility. The project stalled for lack of funding until 2005 when the Annenberg Foundation provided $27.5 million that paved the way for the site’s rehabilitation.

Reconstruction of the site involved the restoration of the Marion Davies Guest House and Pool, construction of recreation and event spaces, and the creation of new amenities to transform 415 PCH into a contemporary beach facility that serves the greater public. Staff from the Annenberg Foundation and the City of Santa Monica worked with Frederick Fisher Partners, Architects; Charles Pankow Builders; Historic Resources Group; Mia Lehrer & Associates; AdamsMorioka; and Roy McMakin to create a new Beach House that blends historic elements and new amenities.

A ‘Light Touch’ on the Environment: The Beach House’s design reflects the natural environment surrounding it with a contemporary interpretation of historic structures and an attention to the natural beauty of Santa Monica State Beach. The pool and pool house, which are trimmed in marble and tile, are an important feature of the site’s design and offer views over the beach and pier.

Splash Pad: The Beach House has a large splash pad on the beach that is available to rent for small gatherings and events. The space can accommodate up to 130 guests and is located outdoors and uncovered.

Spectacular Views: The Annenberg Community Beach House boasts some of the best panoramic views in Southern California, providing an unforgettable backdrop for your event or celebration. The site is surrounded by a lush green courtyard with a historic stone staircase and terraces that provide the perfect place to take in the stunning views of the Pacific coastline.

Modern Interiors: The Event House, Pool House, and Sand & Sea Room are contemporary in design, with cool modern flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an outdoor, uncovered View Deck. Each room offers ample interior space with the flexibility to accommodate a variety of needs.

Rentals: The Beach House is available for both indoor and outdoor weddings, private parties, corporate retreats, family reunions, meetings, conferences, and more. Depending on the size of your event, you may be eligible for discounts or special pricing for groups.
