Alex’s Motivation: The loss of a Grandmother

Alex Grabiec is a 20-year-old communications major with a focus in TV and digital media. He one day aspires to be a sports broadcaster but values family above all else. His principles are directly correlated with his own personal family experiences. Perhaps the event that significantly impacted Alex the most, was the loss of his favorite grandmother. He was a sophomore in High School at the time and the unfortunate loss took place right before his high school football game. Alex knew the circumstances beforehand; he was aware she was feeling ill, but his optimism assured him that she would pull through. He decided to still participate in his game and was hoping to visit her afterwards. However, he came home to the worst news he had heard in his life; his parents somberly told him she passed away.
As Alex told me “there are certain moments in life that either define us, break us, or strengthens us”. He then explained that his grandmother passing away made him appreciate the gift of life and therefore, strengthen his values. His grandmothers’ positive ideologies such as help others, have a strong work ethic, and be kind, transform his life. His parents also continue to enforce her morals as well, as her wished beforehand. Alex knows his grandmother would be proud of accomplishments today. His current goal to is graduate from Montclair State University as a first-generation student in his family. He works to transcend her legacy by making a difference in other people’s lives and it all starts with a “positive attitude” as Alex states.
