Twitter Makes Some Suggestions

Twitter has announced that they will begin rolling out a beta version of unfollow suggestions. Twitter already has suggestions for pages and people you may be interested in following. Well, to combat the problem of junked up feeds, they have come up with the idea of giving you suggestions of people and pages you may want to unfollow. They say the suggestions will come from pages and people that you don’t regularly interact with. Users have long complained that they aren’t seeing relevant content in their feeds and that instead their feeds are cluttered with marketing information and businesses. The different social media platforms have been struggling in recent years to find a balance between satisfying their customers and being able to cater to businesses and organizations. There seems to be a lot of initial backlash to the new system and I can understand the concerns. Critics don’t trust Twitter to offer the proper suggestions. They are concerned that there will be a bias such as has been discovered with Facebook. Some users express concern that friends will be pressured into unfollowing their pages or may unfollow inadvertently. I can see where Twitter is going with this new idea, but I am not sure that it will work out in their favor. When Twitter suggests that a user follow another user, it is seen as a positive action. However, when you are basically suggesting cutting or deleting someone, it is negative no matter how you play it up and people don’t take too kindly to those types of actions. Since it is just in the testing phase right now, it will be interesting to see how more people react to these suggestions.
