Finding The Beauty In Adversity
I can attest to the fact that there is nothing worse than going through a difficult time in your life and feeling like you are all alone in your trials. The obstacles we experience have a way of making us feel defeated and isolated. But somewhere inside, there is a need to be able to make sense of our difficulties. We are looking for a reason that these challenges can result in a positive and meaningful way. If we can just figure it out, it ensures all the pain we endured wasn’t for nothing.
I was trying to avoid it, but it was always there waiting in the darkness just under the surface of the water. As my journey continued to unfold, I realized something critical. If I could find a way to change my perspective about the years of pain and defeat, then the pain and defeat itself would change.
I’ve been called by many the happy survivor and it’s because I’ve found a way to feel safe within myself and embrace those dark places of murky water in my life. It took my looking at those experiences from another perspective. Instead of the that time being something I had to get through, I saw it as a necessary step for me to grow into the person I am today.
Without every aspect of the experience both good and bad, I wouldn’t have the capacity to be the real me, full of flaws and full of victory. Also, had I not experienced that dark murky water, how could I even appreciate the radiant sun when it comes out?
Our belief system is steeped in polar opposites, good vs. evil, wrong vs. right. My new mindset is that there is so much beauty in the adversity. The joy of the good times are what we are all in search of, but the truth is that you are not growing as a person without that adversity. I realize that my choice is now to embrace those dark obstacles and talk freely about them to others. It’s now become my advantage.
As you work through a difficult time in your life, be aware of these four mind shifts that will assist you in turning your adversity into advantage:
#1 Your Circumstance Is Fleeting
Our difficulties are temporary. We cannot predict when it will be over, but things evolve, shift and change in time. Adversity is not meant to last forever. Remember that the sun will come out again and shine fully for you.
Even people with debilitating physical illnesses can alleviate their pain by making a choice to see the positive. The mind is so powerful and can overcome more than you believe. When you don’t let your temporary difficulties consume you, they immediately get smaller and more manageable. You find more peace and get clearer on what action to take next.
#2 Negative Experiences Can Be A Hindrance
Going through difficulties is a humbling experience. It makes us assess what is important in our lives and what direction we want to move toward. These negative experiences can be like an anchor weighing you down. You have to face them and make some sense of what has happened to you. If you look at them with a more positive mindset it won’t have to become something that holds you back.
#3 Obstacles Create Growth Opportunity
If you allow it, adversity can teach you what you need to learn to be the best version of yourself. Spend your time wisely on what truly matters to you, such as growing and developing. That is what will keep you on track for your personal transformation.
When you are able to be objective about the experiences you become free from a huge burden and began learning from what you have gone through. It is only then that you can understand that adversity is the ground for all growth to move forward.
#4 Shift Your Perspective
You must be sure not to victimize your experiences. Life is not happening to me; it is happening with me. You are creating and participating in each and every choice you make. The beauty is, if you don’t like the outcome of your circumstance you have the ability to simply choose again.
Use the point of power of the current moment to your advantage. Adversity keeps us from taking pleasure for granted, reminds us to be grateful for all the large and small pleasures in our lives. An easy way to focus on the good is to practice gratitude. What are you grateful for in your life right now?
I want you to know that I care about you, even though I may not know you personally. I care about your reasons for reading this and your struggles both in life and in your business. I’ve been through a lot of lessons myself, I’ve drowned a hundred different ways — and there have been many times that I’ve had to pull myself out of that dark murky water. I’ve lost my way on the path, people I’ve cared deeply for and pieces of the old me will never return. You may have lesser struggles or your adversities may overshadow mine, but the point is we’re the same. I’ve just made some choices to NOT allow adversity to attack me. We’ll journey through this together.
If you are ready to face adversity, remember that what you are going through right now is temporary. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings. Adversity is the only time your growing as a person, and the more you can see the benefit that results from it, the more positive and good you will find in it. Most importantly, a way that you can to shift to this perspective is to find the gratitude for all that you really do have.
I now realize that all the adversity that has happened in my life is a gift that occurred so I can be a relatable inspiration others. What better way to reach the next level of your life than to turn your adversity into your advantage? What will you choose today?
