Who was Dudley Sutton?

Born in Surrey in 1933, Sutton spent time in the RAF as a mechanic before later pursuing a career in acting.

It was thanks to roles in The Boys and The Leather Boys, both released in the early 1960s, that he came to the attention of casting directors.

In The Boys he played frustrated teenager Stan Coulter while in The Leather Boys he took up the role of Pete, a gay motorcyclist.

Among Dudley’s many roles were appearances in Porridge alongside Ronnie Barker as well as a turn in Smiley’s People, a BBC adaption of John le Carre’s 1979 spy novel.

More recently he made appearances in The Football Factory and as Freddie’s grandfather in series four of Skins.

In 1961 he married American actress Marjorie Steele. The couple had one child together but divorced in 1965.

Who did Dudley Sutton play in Lovejoy and Emmerdale?

Undoubtedly his most famous role was as the loveable tout Tinker Dill in Lovejoy, which first aired on the BBC between 1986 and 1994.

He played Tinker Dill, a friend of the loveable but unpredictable Lovejoy — a roguish antique dealer living in East Anglia.

Speaking in 2017 about Lovejoy, he said: “It’s what they’re going to say on my obituary when I die, regardless of all the different and diverse stuff I’ve done throughout my life.

“It’s good fun because Lovejoy is so popular throughout the world, wherever you go. But people recognise Tinker, they don’t recognise Dudley Sutton.”

Dudley also played William Makepeace in Emmerdale for a period. His character was the grandfather of Seb Makepeace, the ex-boyfriend of Ruby Haswell.

Part of the storyline involved Ruby being subjected to abuse from William Makepeace.
