Magic happens around the edges

The landscape of today’s world has changed. The bell curve has flattened. Technology has moved our potency outward.

Before the internet, all the weight was in the middle — education was the door into a better job, stability, and what many define as “happiness”. So we studied hard to get into the best colleges and chased the corner office. We slept better at night knowing that we had vacation pay and a 401K. Or did we? For many, we stayed up late dreaming about what we really wanted to do, things that would truly fulfill us. But the wall was extremely high. Writing books, making films, building your own company around ideas you’re passionate about, were definitively not safe. So we lived in the middle because that was safe. But we also lived unfulfilled.

Tapping into your potential, everything you can be, sharing your unique gifts with the world, is a journey. Not just a decision. And the fuel you need to sustain that journey is the feeling of fulfillment. Without feeling fulfilled, you will run out of motivation. And eventually your potency will die.

Today, the weight is on edges. The weird. The strange. The specific. The different. This is where the attention is. Because the wall is down. There is no more middle man. The ability to create and distribute freely without taking out a second mortgage on the house has given people a voice. A loud one. As it turns out, people are weird. And our weirdness is what makes us unique. If you’re not unique, no one will see you.

So then how do you be weird = unique = create soil for magic?

  1. You have to make a choice to pull from your Solid Self.

Everyone has a Pseudo and Solid side to them. Pseudo is the false version of you created by who you believe you should be instead of who you really are. Contributing factors include parents, friends, upbringing, advertising, other people’s blueprints and definitions. When you pull this part of you, you may be “likeable” but you are living in the middle, which means no one can see you. If you want to be seen, you must pull from your Solid Self, the dreamer, the misfit, the inner child, the unfiltered, the disruptive, the curious, the part of you you’ve been ignoring since you started paying taxes.

Pulling from your Solid Self means to be aware of the Pseudo tug and make a decision to be more Solid. There will be resistance. Because it’s hard. We’ve been programed to seek things outside of our own truth. It takes practice. But like a muscle, the more you do it, the stronger you will be in your Solid and the richer your soil to create magic. In a nutshell, you have to be fearlessly you.

2. You have to live around the edges.

What does it mean to live around the edges? It means to not just have ideas about who you are, who you want to be, what you have to say, but to actually live it out daily. With your partner, friends, family, boss, co-workers. Living around the edges is a state of being in all your spaces. Not just in certain areas. You either live around the edges or you don’t. If you venture out in certain areas then come in the middle in others, your soil will not produce magic. Of course, it’s a process and it takes time to actually live there. But it’s living there that produces the soil.

Using technology as a tool.

We can use technology to live on the edges.

Use all of today’s tools to give your Solid Self a megaphone. Paint. Write. Direct. Blog. Snap. Share your story, and do it in a way that is honest and uniquely you.

Not once.

One blog post. One video. One whatever you decide to make and express isn’t creating soil. It’s creating false beliefs because chances are, it will not get the response you expected and you will internalize, get discouraged, and quit. So you have to do it over and over again. And the best way to do that is to thread it into your life. Like anything of value, creating soil takes practice. So make it a daily ritual. You don’t have to have a business to produce content and document your journey. All you need is a story and a phone.

Remember, the value isn’t in the content. So don’t focus on how good something is. It’s in the process, exercising your truth muscles, to be heard, to show yourself, so that you are truly comfortable being you.

That will always create the richest soil.
