A Bright Future from the Youngest Minds
“1,2,3, eyes on me!” “1,2, eyes on you!” — VS Week 1
It is the second day at the Village Square library and many familiar faces line the room, jumpy and barely still. “Okay everyone!” a TechEd says, “Today we are going to learn how robots use commands. But instead of just standing here and telling you, all of you are going to team up in your groups and program one of your teammates to stack cups. You think you guys are up for the challenge?” 32 kids cheered in response. I was in the front attending to parents and registration. Suddenly, the room was hushed. I look up and find to my surprise that 5 groups of kids were all bent over their tables discussing. That’s the thing about these kids. Some may want to play Agar.io or just talk about their favorite elementary school teacher all class long but when the time comes to get the job done, they take the jump, whether they know what they’re doing or not.
The creative ability of these kids is astonishing. Under those smiles and playful laughs, there are kids with the potential of shaping the future. A TechEd asks, “Where may you see code in the future?” We were expecting the general answers: self driving cars, robots. But instead I heard teleportation, automated kitchen appliances and various other crazy inventions. This progressive thinking fuels their determination which in turn, allows them to grasp the material with ease. It’s only been 2 days and they already so ahead. I’m so excited to see what they have in store for us in the coming weeks!
