Enjoy Fun, Safe Summer Exercises with Your Dog

Warmer weather means you can enjoy more time outside with your dog. Giving your dog outdoor time is vital to their happiness and well-being. If you’re looking for fun activities for your dog to participate in this summer, below is a list of different activities your dog is sure to love.

Take a Hike

Dogs love going for walks. But instead of taking your dog on a casual walk around the neighborhood, go hiking instead. Your dog is sure to love the sights, smells, sounds and everything that the great outdoors offers. Your dog will benefit from the exercise and keep you company.

Go for a Swim

Keep your dog active and cool from the heat by taking him or her for a swim. Find a nearby dog-friendly lake or beach, or use your backyard pool. If your dog cannot swim, now is the time to teach them. Make sure to put a flotation vest on your dog and a leash. Pick a shallow area and walk with your dog into the water, letting their paws get wet. If your pet seems reluctant, bring a toy or treats to encourage them.

Visit the Dog Park

Dog parks have tons of fun outdoor activities for your dog to enjoy, and most have fenced-in areas so your dog won’t be restricted to a leash. Help your dog through an agility course or play a game of fetch. A dog park is also the perfect place for your dog to meet and play with other dogs.

Regular physical activity is paramount to your dog’s overall health. It prevents the development of certain diseases and prolongs your dog’s life. However, keep in mind that the summer weather can pose serious health risks. Your pet’s health and safety should be the first priority. Make sure to follow these steps:

· Visit the Vet Beforehand
Take your pet for a check-up. Your vet will examine your dog’s overall health and perform tests to check for any issues such as heartworms that can harm their health. Make sure to also speak to your vet about flea and tick control treatments since summer brings more bugs. Also, check with your vet about a supply of pet-specific sunscreen. Dogs with lighter fur and skin can be susceptible to sunburn similarly to people while paler skin.

· Keep Your Dog Safe When Outside
It’s best to take your dog out early in the morning or in the evening since temperatures are cooler. Avoid hot surfaces like asphalt or stone so your dog’s paws don’t burn. Have lots of fresh water available for your pet to stay hydrated. Keep them cool by spraying their paws and stomach with cold water or give them a fan. Make sure where you take your dog has shaded areas so your dog can take breaks from exercise.
