A Social Worker or not?

Welcome to my new blog, before I introduce myself I want to give you information on why I started this blog. I’ve been in the social work field for about 7 years now and what I have noticed is that there seems to be a misunderstanding on who or what a social worker is and what a social may do. I want to provide insight for those interested in the field, been in the field or just curious about what social workers actually do.

So without further a due, my name is Anim Aweh and I am an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW) in the Bay Area. An ACSW is a social worker residing in the state of California and has completed their masters degree from an accredited social work program. The individual is either accruing clinical hours, or in my case completed all clinical hours, submitted to sit for the clinical exam and is waiting to take the clinical exam. Let me be honest and say that I never thought growing up I would be a social worker, I always saw myself as a medical doctor like my first generation kids. As you might guess I even went to college with the intention of studying Pre-Med/ Biology, even though I did things just changed. I got lead to the social work field after working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Boston. I was doing lots of outreach work with the social work department for returning troops, I really enjoyed being there for them during such a critical time and being that one person who just listen unbiasedly. At the time I didn’t realize it but my passion started to grow right there and to my surprise I learned that social work was more than just the local county workers.

To begin, a social worker is an individual with a masters degree or higher and has satisfied all of their state’s guidelines for licensure. I know that might surprise a lot of readers since the term is used so loosely. So not only have I’ve been able to work with various populations but also in various different capacities. Social workers provide 70% of the worlds mental health services and work in roles such as therapist, adoptions, medical social workers, macro/policy, community organizing, child and welfare workers. This blog will definitely touch on the vastness of the social work profession.

The goal of my blog is to provide you with information and facts on the richness of the Social Work field and what we offer while letting you know everything we are and are not!
