Sustain Weekly — More Moos and Milk
“A publisher who writes is like a cow in a milk bar” — Arthur Koestler

What kind of cow milk do you drink?
- Skim (fat 0–0.5%)
- Low-fat (1%)
- Semi-Skim (1.5%-2%)
- Reduced fat (2%)
- Full fat (Whole)
- Organic Milk
- Flavored Milk
- Untreated Raw Milk
- Straight from farm Milk
- No, I drink non-cow Milk
If you picked the last option, you’re in the 2%.So, non-cow could be either other animal dairy or alternative milk proteins. If it was the latter, Soymilk was the de facto choice. It has good traction and uptake world over. Other emerging varieties in this segment are coconut milk, cashew milk, almond milk, rice milk, pea milk, Hemp milk etc. The most notable trend is that milk consumption is on the upswing and the number of farms across the globe is shrinking.

Globally, the number of farms is forecast to reduce by over the next 10 years. Coupled with this trend is the rise in the global population to 10 billion in the next 30 years. The need for increased food production across a decreasing number of farms has become pressing. Key indicators such as milk produced per cow and number of cows are on upward incline. The number of cows were going through a downward cycle till 2005.However, this trend has reversed and there is a continuous increase in the number of milk cows since 2010.
The current period is a favorable cycle for milk production and dairy farmers. The upward trend in milk production, output per cow and number of milk cows are strong indicators for positive and exponential growth in revenues for systems aiding production. Consequently, feed costs are going through a downward trend, making the forecast cycle a profitable growth period for farms and farm owners.Increased consumption of dairy products at home is another positive driver for the milk market. You’re picking more prepared foods, new types of cheese, yogurts, and other dairy products that your parents didn’t bring home. Right?

Milk prices will rise in this period and businesses that make the $$ during this period will reinvest in automation and connected systems to increase production and profitability. Automation is one of the key technology trends in the farm ecosystem. It forms the basis for the deployment of connected technologies and IoT in farm environments. The advent of Industrial IoT in this environment changes the dynamics in the farm environment. Netherlands is where all the cow action is. Both literally and figuratively.
This is part #2 on Cows and connectivity from the Anniversary Sustain #52 — “Future Moos”. I’ll cover more farm technology in selected weeklies in the future. Till then, got milk?
Some other things I found interesting from the last week
- Samsung acquired a virtual assistant called Viv from the same guys who made Siri. Will pitch it against Siri and Google Assistant.
- Toyota’s latest robot is a palm-sized baby bot that will hold conversations. Will be available for sale in 2017. Companion robots are shaping up of age in Japan and developed markets.
- Asian Manufacturers are adding more industrial robots than the rest of the world combined. Interesting trend as typically automation takes root in the western part and Japan ahead of anywhere else. This trend is one to watch.
- For the past year, people in the US have been sighting clowns in some neighborhoods that are close to wooded areas. These clowns are trying to lure kids into the woods. More info on the article here on the psychology behind why clowns are creepy. Crazy clowns.
