What Colors Can Your Dog See?

I recently went to a school on the North Side of Chicago with Whitney, my dog, and for some reason, the first and second students appeared very interested in color blindness. When one of them inquired whether dogs can only see in black and white, I said that while they can see some hues, canines cannot distinguish between red and green.

I declared I have to judge when it is safe to cross if we are at a lighted intersection. I discussed how I keep my back straight, pay attention, and keep an eye out for approaching autos. I tell Whitney to go ahead when it appears traffic is moving in the direction I want it to when I assume the light is green. Before bringing me over, Whitney perks up her ears to listen for oncoming traffic and scans the area to the left and right to ensure it is safe.

The pupils moved on to other inquiries after appearing to be pleased with that response. Are you constantly blind? What was the name of your teacher at the Seeing Eye school? Whitney, does she enjoy licking a lot? How do you and Whitney pass the time? But ultimately their minds drifted back to colors.

One girl told me that her school uniform color is red. But does Whitney think it’s green, she questioned. I gave the question some thought and found I couldn’t answer. I returned home and conducted some research.

Can a dog see color?

I discovered that although dogs can see colors, they do not perceive them in the same manner that we do. Violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red are only a few of the hues that people can see. Only blue, yellow, and a few hues of gray are visible to dogs. For an approximation of which colors dogs perceive best, see the color chart below.

Dogs would see the colors of a rainbow as being bright yellow, gray, dark blue, and dark yellow (almost brownish). Dogs do not perceive red, purple (violet), or orange like we do. Therefore, even though it is known that dogs can distinguish between different hues of yellow, blue, and gray, a red or green uniform might appear faded, gray, or unclear to a dog.

How dogs see colors?

Dog eyes function similarly to a camera. Through the pupil, light enters. The quantity of light that enters is controlled by the iris, a flexible structure. The light then travels through the transparent cornea and lens, where it is focused on the retina, a layer that is sensitive to light. The retina has light, motion, and color-sensitive rods and cones that translate light into electrical impulses. The brain creates a picture from the signals that the cones and rods give to it via the optic nerve.

In contrast to the three types of cones seen in human eyes, dogs only have two types. Dogs cannot discern as many different hues as humans can.

What colors can dogs see best?

Does a dog have the ability to detect color? is unquestionable “yes,” even though certain colors are less evident to them than others and some colors are completely absent from their perception. Grey, blue, and yellow in varying degrees predominate in a dog’s habitat; red, green, and orange are absent. Red balls could be completely forgotten on the grass, but your dog will be most affected by yellow and blue toys.
