My Mom

My mother on the right with former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi on the left. Picture from the author’s personal collection.

Graceful lioness.
Quiet,poised strides. Folks followed.
She’d nurtured many.

My mother, with two Masters degrees and a Ph.D., in English and an author, was principal of K-12 school in New Delhi, India. It was a government aided school, and she was extremely enterprising is raising funding for the school much of which she used to provide fees (fellowships) and admit students whose families did not have the means, to improve lab facilities, classrooms, library, extra curricular activities and meals. Here she is seen with former PM of India, Indira Gandhi who visited her school. My mother also met with other former PMs of India to raise funding for her school, such as Lal Bahadur Shastri and Jawaharlal Nehru during her term as principal.

On a personal level she is my role model of a strong, caring, dedicated, loving, patient, and nurturing mother. I miss her. She passed in 2015, a week after she turned 90.

This haiku is in response to the prompt, “graceful”. Thank you!
