Gift of Learning

Every child has the right to learn

An electrifying buzz filled the air as I envisioned Girl Scouts Goes Global. I dreamed of walking into a remote Indian village where all students had desks and chairs to learn, computers to access, and white boards to demonstrate the “Lesson of the Day.”

I needed a strategic plan to rally local troops and solicit key players required to make my lofty dream come to fruition: family, fellow sisters, and town residents. My unfiltered world transforms with one dream, one community, and one aspiration. Let the vision become reality!

It all began by motivating local volunteers and encouraging county troops to join my field-day fundraiser and “play with a purpose.” Recognizing possible field day dilemmas such as: pestering mosquitoes, quantity of turf space, and filthy bathrooms, I surveyed the park weeks beforehand to circumspect these issues and account for unforeseen variables. With a multilateral effort from family, I coordinated the logistics and labor of food along with entertainment to ensure that participants were attended to and that volunteers adhered to their assignments. Even my 68-year-old grandmother was on-task patiently handing cups of water to thirsty children. All members of the community were here to help this humanitarian cause.

After quantifying our proceeds and qualitatively measuring the smiles of our attendees, I learned the intrinsic power of a human connection to a cause. I lived out my dream: to help students in India attain the priceless entity that nobody could ever rob them of — the gift of learning.
