Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park: A Remarkable Achievement in Andhra Pradesh’s Energy Landscape
The inauguration of the Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park on 8th January 2019 marked a significant milestone for the Andhra Pradesh Energy Department. With a capacity of 1000 MW, the solar park is the third-largest of its kind globally, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a leader in renewable energy. The acquisition of land for the Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park within a remarkable nine-month timeframe, without displacing a single resident, demonstrated efficient planning and execution by the government. The creation of the Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park was a collaborative effort between the Andhra Pradesh state government and the central government. The Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation Pvt Ltd (APSPCL), as the implementing agency, held joint ownership between the national Solar Energy Corporation of India (50%), APGENCO (41%), and the state New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation (9%). The solar park contributed to the state’s energy requirements and bolstered the local economy. With a workforce of 282 individuals, it provided employment opportunities for skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers. Expert workers accounted for 499 jobs, while semi-skilled and unskilled workers constituted 228 and 555 jobs, respectively. The Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park has generated 800 hundred million units of energy by OCT 2017, it results in the reduction of 700,000 tons of emissions of CO2 (Carbon dioxide) Furthermore, to address water scarcity concerns, the park implemented an innovative rainwater harvesting system to meet all its water requirements, including cleaning solar panels and other necessary uses. This sustainable approach minimised the ecological footprint of the solar park.
