In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of disinfectants has become more important than ever. Among the most commonly used disinfectants isopropyl alcohol, with 70% concentration being the preferred choice. But why exactly is 70% isopropyl alcohol used as a disinfectant?

The effectiveness of isopropyl alcohol as a disinfectant lies in its ability to denature proteins of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. However, the concentration of the alcohol solution plays a crucial role in its antimicrobial effectiveness. Solutions with lower alcohol concentration (less than 50%) are not effective enough against microorganisms, while higher concentrations (above 90%) evaporate too quickly, leaving insufficient contact time for the alcohol to penetrate and denature the proteins.

This is where 70% isopropyl alcohol comes in. It has been found to be more effective at killing microorganisms than higher concentrations of isopropyl alcohol. This is because the water content in the 70% IPA solution allows for better penetration into the microorganisms and denaturation of proteins.

In addition to its antimicrobial effectiveness, 70% isopropyl alcohol is also safer to use. Solutions with higher concentration can be highly volatile, making them more dangerous to handle and use. On the other hand, solutions with lower alcohol concentration may not be as effective at killing microorganisms, requiring more frequent applications, which can lead to increased exposure and potential harm.

Furthermore, 70% isopropyl alcohol is less likely to cause skin irritation or damage to surfaces, compared to higher concentrations. It also has a longer shelf life and is more stable than higher concentrations of isopropyl alcohol.

The use of 70% isopropyl alcohol as a disinfectant is not limited to healthcare settings. It is also commonly used in laboratories, households, and industries. However, it is important to note that isopropyl alcohol should not be used on certain surfaces, such as some plastics, painted surfaces, or electronic devices, as it can cause damage.
