The Ramayana, an epic tale which transcend time, has captivated generations with its profound teachings and timeless characters. Its retelling has always been a subject of interest, offering opportunities for creative interpretations and adaptations. However, the recent announcement of the film Adipurush, touted as a retelling of the Ramayana, has left many people disappointed. In this blog post, I want to explore why I think Adipurush fails to meet the expectations of those who crave a meaningful retelling of this beloved epic.

Superficiality over Substance: One of the primary reasons why Adipurush falls short is its emphasis on superficial elements rather than delving into the depth and wisdom of the original Ramayana. The focus appears to be primarily on extravagant visuals, grandiose action sequences, and star power, rather than the profound philosophical and ethical dilemmas faced by the characters.

Lack of Nuance: The Ramayana is renowned for its nuanced portrayal of complex characters who grapple with moral choices and inner conflicts. Unfortunately, Adipurush seems to simplify these characters, reducing them to one-dimensional representations of good and evil. By neglecting the intricate psychological journeys of characters like Rama, Sita, and Ravana, Adipurush misses an opportunity to engage viewers on a deeper level.

Commercialisation and Sensationalism: While commercial success is undoubtedly a significant factor in the film industry, it should not overshadow the importance of staying true to the essence of a story. Adipurush appears to prioritise commercial elements and sensationalism, potentially sacrificing the integrity of the Ramayana in the process. This focus on marketability often dilutes the richness and cultural significance of the original narrative.

Historical and Cultural Sensitivity: Retelling ancient stories like the Ramayana requires a delicate balance between artistic creativity and cultural sensitivity. Adipurush, distorted cultural aspects of the epic by neglecting proper research and cultural consultation.

Missed Opportunities for Social Commentary: The Ramayana has always been open to reinterpretation, allowing artists to explore contemporary themes and offer social commentary. However, Adipurush appears to miss this opportunity, opting for a generic and formulaic approach. By shying away from addressing relevant social issues, the film fails to make a meaningful impact beyond mere entertainment.

Rich Tradition of Ramayana Retellings: It is important to recognize that the craving for Ramayana retellings is not a new phenomenon. Across homes, colonies, communities, cities, states, and nations, the Ramayana has been retold and celebrated in various forms. From stage plays, local adaptations, dance performances, to television series, countless creative expressions have brought the story to life. These grassroots retellings often imbibe the cultural nuances and local flavors, fostering a sense of belonging and shared heritage among diverse audiences.

All in all, retelling of the Ramayana is undoubtedly needed by people, Adipurush falls short of satisfying the craving for a thoughtful and introspective adaptation. Its emphasis on superficiality, lack of nuance, commercialisation, missed opportunities for social commentary, and the rich tradition of grassroots retellings undermine the essence and significance of Ramayana. As enthusiasts of this treasured tale, I hope for future retellings that will delve deeper into the core values and philosophical teachings that have made the Ramayana timeless.
