Isn’t this a consistent theme in American anti-authoritarian archetypes? The anti-square 1950's greaser, 1960's hippie, 1970's punk rocker, or 1980's metalhead/rapper? I’m sure you can dig deeper in each era — and go further back in time — as you say to the “cowboy”. And perhaps the contemporary archetype is the hacker.
