What is it about Art & Technology?

It’s in the air. It’s buzzing through your Facebook feed, cities’ events calendars, movies, major news publications. Why is Art & Technology starting to play such a pivotal role in our culture? I explore this domain to reveal the significance of art & technology in our lives.

Let’s start by noting the obvious: new technology has widened the horizons of what’s possible. Technology has made us more efficient, more connected, and better informed. Simultaneously with making our lives easier, each new technology expands the mediums of self-expression, and has been doing so since the beginning of human history. Since the birth of computing, tech tools have been emerging with increasing momentum, and these tools are becoming more sophisticated, as well as more available to just about anyone. Anyone with a zest to create can now express an idea, a feeling, a vision in a variety of ways — take a stunning photo, write a blog, create electronic music, build a light sculpture, shoot an experimental video, etc, etc, etc. Many of these creators are eager to share their work and ideas with the thirsty public. And what do we see coming from it? An abundance of creative events is popping up in cities all around the world showing off this new art, parties with phenomenal electronic music, odd literary salons, experimental workshops, meetups of all sorts. Even entire cities spring up temporary to provide an outlet for the free-thinking and the free-spirited (think: Burning Man and its many offshoots). As a result, increasingly people are connecting and engaging with each other, learning new ideas and oftentimes new skills as well. It’s a cultural revolution of sorts, and it’s a very exciting one.
Through art, human consciousness expands, evolves, improves. Technology provides the many media.
