Cactus Jack and His Very Own Cactus Mac

There is nothing like waking up on a Wednesday morning and realising that you’ve made it just in time for Travis Scott’s Mcdonald’s collaboration.

Blood pumping and anticipation mounting, this adrenaline rush is nothing new to the avid hype hunter. The shop.travisscott.com page loads up. You’re greeted by rows of tees, shorts, and joggers in the signature Mcdonald's red, regular white and black, and Travis’ iconic Cactus Jack brown. There is a lot of rapid blinking and eye rubbing at this point- because mind you, your alarm went off less than a minute ago, and honestly, it’s just a lot to take in in the morning.

Scrolling down, you spot a few premium denim pieces drawing on design cues from the latest Palace Skateboards x Evisu Jeans collaboration. You’ve probably also smiled at the similarities.

With a flick of two fingers we’re brought all the way down to the end of the collection where the wild and kitschy items lie. There are so many collectibles that one can already imagine setting up for display and deco in your house- I personally went with the metal lunchbox emblazoned with Travis’ cheesy grin. From the Golden Arches rugs, “Im lovin’ it” Lunch Tray, Action Figure (lifesize!) cutout, to the star piece- the chicken McNugget body pillow, the entire collection can only be described as so iconically Travis.

Print out for cactus. Nike cactus trail.

Almost reflexively, I found myself hurriedly adding over 9 items to the cart. Various tees in size M and L, black, white, and brown. Being used to copping for resale, where the profits usually go to cover the cost of the portion you keep “for personal” — your personal collection, half the items in my cart were there with the intention to be sold. So used to the “buy now, think later” mentality that we are so conditioned to by Supreme and sneaker releases.

Mind you, the prices of the merch range from US$25 to US$300. Travis as usual has kept his merch to the same accessible price points as the previous drops. But every seasoned international Travis Scott merch customer knows, the shipping hits different. With the usual Shopify platform, shipping and taxes are only calculated upon check out. It was then when I realised that my little morning shopping spree had racked up over US$100 in shipping costs. I had no choice but to remove the Cactus Jack Basketball. With that gone, shipping dropped down to a more palatable US$58.

Pree my final choices.

Looking back at the past successful collaborations he has been a part of- the virtual concert on Fornite (lasting only 8+ minutes) which attracted 12.3 million people, his Astroworld merch designed by Offwhite, and Louis Vuitton men’s designer- Virgil Abloh, that came out in tandem with the Travis’ blue Jordan 4’s.

There really hasn’t been a single Travis Scott drop that disappointed. Cactus Jack has in fact only come back stronger every time- delighting his fans and surprising us every single time.

So what will the King of collabs come out with next?
