He really hits the nail on the head. I think I’ve also heard this referred to as “white fragility.” Honestly, for liberals, I think it’s a bit of a defense mechanism, along the lines of “I’m not racist/I feel bad about racism so I don’t need to change anything/it’s not my problem,” which conceals the truth, which is “I’m not comfortable/feel powerless around this topic.” I think the big step is going to be reorienting around the idea that, in fact, white Americans are culpable for systemic racism, especially if we do nothing to stop it, and need to be a bit braver in taking responsibility to confront the problem.
