I am Betty

Some years ago in a far way country, after graduating from college, I thought software engineering could be a good fit for me. It was not what I majored in, but I had studied hydrodynamics and the internships I had done included extensive coding. However I was talked out of it, convinced I was not geek enough (I know, that was a long time ago in a country far, far away) and followed the usual path in working in the field I had studied.

Fast forward 2.5 years ago after many changes in my life, including a move in a foreign country, right here in the bay. At this time, I felt the need to reinvent myself, and software engineering emerged again as a long lost ambition.
Since then, I have explored the many ways to learn computer science to enter that field and started to carve out my path.
My initial studies were very theoretical, and I hated the gap between what I had studied and the requirements of my job. So this time I wanted hands-on, as close to real-life as possible projects. I also wished to learn on an as-needed basis depending on my current goal and not go over the whole theory at first. I decided to combine Universities Continuing Studies classes and online courses. With the former I have hands-on practice, with many teachers professionals themselves, and with the latter I can try to deepen the knowledge acquired in class.
However, it requires lots of back and forth, lots of patience, it is lonely and I miss having a one-stop place (a.k.a. a physical school) where I could have my questions answered and share and confront my progress. My motivation and my love for coding keep me going, but as Holberton School student I will get all that and some more. The curriculum is extensive, designed by professionals who know where I should focus more than I do, the projects are the core of the learning process, and the community will give me an extra boost as I can share and learn even more.

Holberton School is My chance to become the software engineer I want to be.
