This is an enjoyable read and I particularly liked the fact that all the events take place over the course of just one day — it’s very cleverly done. I liked Tress who is about to give birth just as her husband Max goes mysteriously missing, and I loved Noah, Max’s best friend who is about to discover more than he bargained for. The mounting tension is excellently done, and there is a moving focus on the lies people tell in order to do the right thing.

However, my favourite character is the widowed older neighbour Nancy who is about to meet her first love, but who finds that memories aren’t necessarily to be relied upon. I started off not quite sure what Nancy was doing in the story, but she’s wonderful and I loved her development, and the scene at the school reunion is top-notch. Go Nancy!

On the negative side, I really hated Max and had no idea why Tress had married him — he seems supremely self-obsessed and shallow to me. And I never really got a good feel for Noah’s wife Anya, or for the reasons behind her decisions, which was a shame. However, it’s a good read nonetheless.
