What is Yoga Therapy and how it can benefit you
Since becoming an C-IAYT certified Yoga Therapist I am frequently asked, “what is yoga therapy?” Hopefully, this blog will give you an idea on what it is, how it can help you, and the costs involved.
Yoga Therapy Definition : The application of yogic principles and tools including asana (posture), pranayama (breath work) and meditation, as well as ayurvedic dietary, herbal and lifestyle recommendations to help people with a wide variety of physical or psychological complaints and/or symptoms.
Yoga therapy encompasses much more than traditional therapies, such as occupational and/or physical therapy. While these modalities are excellent and certainly have their role in the arena of healing arts, the care provided with yoga therapy delves much deeper. As an RN, Yoga Therapist and Ayurvedic Health Counselor I assess the client as a more complex, tripartite being. To look at a client with a physical symptom and treat just the symptom is, in my opinion selling the client, and intended therapy short. Symptoms that we experience, more often times than not, are much deeper than the symptom itself and in most cases are the triggering sign that deeper issues need to be resolved. Our bodies have an amazing way of telling us that something is not right and it is time to deal with an issue. When we suppress these issues with medications or ignoring them all together then a physical manifestation of that issue will appear. As a Yoga Therapist and Ayurvedic Health Counselor, it is my goal to not only address the symptom but to dive deeper to get to the root of the symptom with the goal of healing the original issue and therefore resolving the physical symptom.
My specialty is working with clients who have suffered traumatic injuries. In many cases, the client has suffered physical pain as a result of an accident and/or surgery. As an Ayurvedic Counselor and Yoga Therapist I recognize that if the tripartite being (body, mind and spirit) is not addressed, then the client may experience immediate, but temporary progress and pain relief. If the issues of the mind and spirit involving post traumatic stress are suppressed and not addressed, the client could soon manifest pain again in the body and suffer recurring symptoms.
With Yoga Therapy I often combine Ayurvedic treatments and remedies that combine healing herbal tinctures applied with heat to affected areas, cupping, therapeutic touch, and many other modalities. For healing of the whole person emotional and/or spiritual counseling may be suggested or required.

What to expect :
Initial visit in office :
• In depth assessment and review of medical history, diagnosis, current physical status and mental status.
• in depth assessment of physical limitations or restrictions
• pain scale
• establishment of client’s physical/mental/spiritual goals*
• Development of measured, evidenced based improvement goals for rehabilitation
• Development of Yoga Therapy Asana’s (postures) program to meet clients needs for optimal rehabilitation
• Discussion of other modalities such as tinctures and therapeutic treatments that may need to be implemented.
• Agreement with client regarding intended treatment plan/recommendations.
Further visits in studio :
• Implementation of yoga therapy and/or treatments as discussed with client during initial in office visit.
• Continued re-assessment of evidenced based improvements and re-evalutaion of effectiveness of therapy to ensure therapy is adjusting and changing to meet clients rehabilitation and therapeutic needs.
• Discussion of the 8 limbs of yoga : 1. Yama (moral disciplines) 2. Niyama (observances) 3. Asana (physical postures) 4. Pranyama (breath work) 5. Pratyahara (sense withdrawal) 6. Dharana (focused concentration) 7. Dhyana (meditation) 8. Samadhi (bliss) -each of which offers guidance on how to lead a more meaningful and purposeful life.
• Education/discussion and demonstration on how to incorporate the 8 limbs of yoga to assist client in improving their success in rehabilitation.
• Education/discussion on Ayurveda
• Education/discussion on how to incorporate an Ayurvedic Lifestyle to assist client in improving success in rehabilitation.
• Continuous review of status and goals to ensure evidenced based progress is being made and adjusting plan/recommendations accordingly.
• Goal : Client will have improvement of their physical symptoms and abilities and ultimately feel a sense of peace and physical and psychological well being.
It is ideal when doing rehabilitation that client be seen by yoga therapist 2–3 times per week.
