After the first few rounds of boxing, here are the lessons that I learned from Gary Vaynerchuck:

  1. Social media is like boxing; punching is very detailed. Jab, jab, jab, then right hook is to give give give then ask in social media. But others are too romantic — they ask too much for sales.
  2. If you’re always throwing right hooks, people duck because they know what’s coming.
  3. What are we doing wrong in social media? Everybody’s so hungry to get to their right hook; 99% of people are not putting their time into their jabs. They are not jabbing.
  4. DJ-ing of content — Take on the lessons from what you have seen or read and instead of using social media as a distribution channel, do the following strategies:

a. quote cards to Facebook
b. infographic to Pinterest
c. funny moment — create a gif and post to Tumblr
d. wait for something that’s trending on Twitter, then link the original source to that

5. Content vs. context — social networks are places to natively tell stories. In the context of the social media, you have to respect the context of the room in which you are storytelling. Moreover, people has to know the psychology of who’s on the social media. For instance, why is a female at 8PM on Pinterest? Why is she there at all? Females pin something on Pinterest that they want to buy or they dream to buy.

6. “I really respect my haters. That’s how they feel.” — Gary Vaynerchuck

7. If you want to have a relationship with your audience, you have to communicate with them.
