After writing and rewriting my response ( I wanted to express myself as eloquently as you but I just kept ending up in run on sentences ), I read some of the responses . Some enraged me , some I agreed with, a couple I responded to. My takeaway is this: having grown up with some disadvantages, I still knew it was an advantage being white, and I was secretly grateful. As an adult , when I would read articles about reparation for slavery , and think “ oh c’mon that happened 200 years ago, and “ my ancestors never owned slaves ( too broke ass), as if that let me off the hook . It wasn’t till a friend of mine who is a leader in Public Health told me of the concept of epigenetics, that it became clear to me that damage is still being done, and I through my uninformed apathy , was subtly contributing to it. I’m trying to do better, and be better, hopefully it’s not too late for the next generation. I’d like my granddaughter to grow up in a better world , where men( and women ) are judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
