I don’t know either, Lindsay.

I agree that there is something about an enclosed space — it invites a certain amount of community, usually offers rituals that can be meaningful, singing — which I can take just about anywhere!

I found this regarding churches in southern Orange County:

In the Catholic Church I attended, at the ordination of a deacon (to become a priest), this was sung:

Our daughter, at the time, was in high school and played the flute. A woman sang the main part — and the choral director interspersed two flutes playing — our daughter played the main flute, and a younger girl did the back-up flute — and it was absolutely STUNNING! I got shivers listening to it, watching the ritual take place — the bishop attended as he had to do the “ordination” and the deacon was laying face down, arms out on the floor between the main aisles as this song was sung. The bishop was known for disliking choirs in general, and after the whole “ceremony” was done, and especially after the singing of The Litany of the Saints, he actually said “I’ll have to take THIS choir with me as I travel!” He was so impressed. I must say that this particular mass, along with another I was involved with (the planning and carrying out of it) were the two most remembered masses by most of the churchgoers.

So yes, there is something that is “offered” and I like “receiving” it —

But at the same time, I cannot buy into all of it. Maybe that is not necessary, I don’t know.

I’m getting ready to buy Reza Aslan’s book — ”God, a Human History” and his other book about Jesus entitled “Zealot”. Just offering different viewpoints, and I am one UP for learning!

I think the search IS the journey……and I’m searching….and journeying.

As you are also.
