“The criminal negligence of the parents” or “How to bring the killer?”

Today juvenile delinquency is beginning to acquire a global character. Digits are shocking. Only in the United Kingdom about 400 children over the past two decades have been convicted of murder. In many other European countries the problem of juvenile delinquency looks similar. It had been very difficult to establish the exact number of murders commited by the children, since supernumeraries are usually not taken into consideration by statisticians to the category of minors which are not subject to criminal liability.

There is a perception that the murders committed by children, are more a matter of accident than a deliberate intent. I assume that many of you are solidar on this case as well. Nevertheless, as a criminal practice reveals that in most cases it is not. From my experience as a journalist, there was a variety of crime incidents committed by minors. Within the last project framework with my colleagues-psychologists we frequently communicate with parents whose children have committed criminal offenses. These talks are really difficult, especially given the state of parents, whose children became murderers. A decision to write this article was triggered by those conversations. Almost all parents of young criminals questioned themselves with the same questions as, «What have they done wrong, what kind of missteps were taken in kid’s upbringing, that their children have committed a murder?», « Was it possible to prevent it?». These questions pushed me to privately investigate , I was determined to find the answers to these questions and find out what is a motive of children who commit murders. Let’s start with the incident ….

On the night of Easter, 2011, 14-year-old Daniel Bartlam entered bedroom of his mother Jacqui and hit her head seven times with a claw hammer. Then he covered her blood soaked body with paper, poured gasoline on it and lit it, to destroy the evidence. Daniel left the blazing house and reported to police that the assailant attacked his mother. Police found the murder weapon in kids room. After a lengthy investigation and judicial lawsuit Daniel Bartlam was sentenced for 16 years imprisonment.

Most often in such cases either parents or near relatives appear to be victims of minors killers. Psychologists recognized the fact that most of the murders commited by children is due to poor upbringing and lack of parental supervision. However, the problem still remains; 80% of young criminals are future tenants of the adult colonies. Many of you might think that this problem will not touch you whatsoever. Parents of this child, obviously, also considered so. Perhaps, it is worth to find out what is the nature of such terrible consequences?

To begin with, lets start analyzing what typical might lead to violence. In fact, there are not many reasons: arranged action, prostration or detente, prompting external factor, revenge or response reaction. At an early age child is not capable of commiting an arranged action, especially when it comes to violence in the form of murder. Most of the psychologists assert this unanimously. Four options remain, prostration or detente occur as a result of a strong tension, pressure, so desire to get rid of all these, a child may go out for an uncontrolled actions. Encouraging external factor might be any subject, who motivates your child that there is a necessity for violence as way to escape from certain situation.

For an instance, a teenager may persuade another one to commit a crime, by convincing him that it is the only way to solve a disturbing problem. Revenge and response reaction occur as a counter to violence. Moreover, reaction commonly has instant and reactive character; yet revenge might occur after a lengthy period time, in the interim of robust stress.

All in all, a juvenile while being violent is driven by four things, which is apparent. So why do some children act violently while others do not? For what reason unconscious destructive decision occurs?

Firstly, for this kind of decision to occur, adolescent has to be convinced in effectiveness of violent actions. Correspondingly, someone has to demonstrate him this efficiency, no matter in what form, not necessarily physical violence. Taken into regard that the very first lessons of life a child gets from family, where he copies behavior of grownups, it can be assumed that in most cases the efficiency of violence is demonstrated by parents themselves.

TIn such a way this postulate gets its existence: “Stronger one is the one who is right.”

As a result of this, at the time child appears under stress or pressure, he tries to get rid of that and begins automatically using the model which he believes to be the most effective; as a result of it he commits a crime. Aforementioned case does not vanish without leaving a trace; such an incident imprints on memory as on a film tape. If we were to articulate about why after many years later, an adult experiences recrudesce, the reason is that we are dealing with a reactive (automatic) action — one who happens to be in a similar situation and does not know how to act, he automatically repeats an incident from his past experience.

So what is the parents’ negligence in here? Most of the parents do believe that the upbringing of a kid is in providing him with everything needed: clothing, food, education, and that’s where parental duty ends. However, in order to bring up a decent person, these conditions are not enough. The difference between a child and adult is in responsibility; child is unable to take any responsibility, he does only what he enjoys. In case of a teen, he opposes in addition himself to all.

A parent is in charge to teach a child about responsibility, to teach how to fulfill the obligations so that he can become a mature adult. But before one does not realize what he/she is doing, while one is not willing to take responsibility for his children, it is not possible to teach children. One acts without awareness of the consequences actions may cause, and later wonder watching your child doing same.

Either parents finally will take responsibility for their children’s future, responsibility for their upbringing or they have to be prepared that sooner or later, your own children may become hostile against you and become criminals.
