They even pie each other in the face!
As I write this, I’m probably about an hour removed from the breaking news that acclaimed actor Burt Reynolds passed away at the age of 82. Reynolds’ career spanned decades, and he was known for his roles in films like “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Deliverance.”
“Boogie Nights” is one of my favorite films and Reynolds’ Jack Horner role is what comes to mind when he’s mentioned (although Reynolds reportedly hated working with Paul Thomas Anderson and never watched the completed version).
Or, what I’ve done to quell my money anxiety.
Few topics give me more anxiety than money — how much I have, what bills I have due, how much I have saved vs. how much I want to have saved, etc. I know I’m not alone in this; There’s a reason Suze Orman and the “Rich Dad Poor Dad” guy have jobs.
I also know that money can be an emotionally charged topic. I mean … I kept up with the recent Refinery29 “money diary” drama.
While money can be controversial and stress-inducing, it doesn’t change the fact that every…
Duchess Meghan, Princess Diana and authenticity.
I remember, as a six-year-old in Grapevine, Texas, watching my mom set aside the Aug. 31, 1997 issue of the Dallas Morning News. She put it on a desk in my parents’ room which also held bills and Precious Moments figurines.
“Why?” I asked, since we usually chucked old newspapers in a basket by the table in our breakfast nook, which would later be emptied into the trash. She pointed to a picture on the front, showing wreckage of a limousine.
“Princess Diana died. I want to save the newspaper so I remember what…
What to expect when you’re always expecting the worst.

Is your mental health a constant work in progress? Do you often wish you could “just be over and done with this bullshit and be ‘normal’ already?” I feel you.
Here’s a fact about me: I have depression and anxiety. I have learned a lot, both about myself and about mental illness, since receiving my diagnosis when I was 18. I’m 27 now.
At some point during my college years I realized I had basically two…
The death penalty is a macabre subject, and I hesitated to write on a topic so dark and divisive. I ultimately decided it’s important to write about for many reasons. So far in 2018, 15 people have been executed in the United States . The week I wrote this, the state of Tennessee carried out its first execution since 2009 and a legal battle brewed over a planned execution in Nebraska set to be carried out with fentanyl. As long as the U.S. practices capital punishment, the American people should be talking about it. …
Hey, dudes: We don’t owe you a smile.
If you’re a woman and have ventured into public at any point in your life, I would bet money that a man has told you to smile. I would further guess that the suggestion came unprompted and likely from a stranger.
Curious, I posed the question to my female friends on Facebook and Twitter: “Has a man ever asked you to smile? What was the context?” Within minutes, several of my friends replied with stories. Most said something to the effect of, “Yes, all the time.” …
I bought it for the convenience, but why do I remain a customer?
Note: This is not an advertisement for Soylent. This is an essay examining my behavior and other consumers’ behavior when it comes to Soylent. I wasn’t paid to write this.
Soylent the drink
If you dwell in certain corners of the internet, like Facebook and Reddit, chances are you have at least heard of Soylent. Soylent is, as the name suggests, a soy-based meal replacement drink that bills itself as being “nutritionally complete” — e.g., you could drink a lot of it and not come down with…
Before I dive into the meat of this story it’s important to define the terms used. I’ll use Google dictionary’s definition of “the news” as “newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events.” In this piece I’m mostly referring to your local news outlets — the little papers and the network affiliate stations that mainly report on the mundane. I focus on print media because that’s where most of my experience lies.
To a lesser extent, I’m also talking about the bigger news sources: The New York Times, The Daily Beast, CNN, etc.
I am not talking…
