Why Do We Have to Label Our friends?

I find it hard to brand friendship.

When asked “How do you know her?”, “She is a friend” is no longer a good enough answer anymore. We are expected, perhaps even compelled, to clarify what “type” of friend. Seems absurd. Sounds absurd too.
