A Letter From Your Neighborhood Agnostic Atheist
The world is a complex and interesting place. But how'd it get here? Ask one hundred thousand people and you'll probably receive multiple answers that differ. The most probably being “God”. Maybe you'll get a few that answer “I don't know”. And hopefully you'll get the pleasure in hearing an Atheists view on how the world did or didn't get here.
Growing up, religion was never (thankfully) forced upon me. It was just something that was there. We never went to church. Never said grace. Never prayed. However, I did make my first communion along with attending multiple religion classes.
Maybe it’s the fact that I hate being told what to do that caused me to venture out and explore other religions. Or maybe it was just pure curiosity. It doesn't matter though, does it? Because it's already done.
Keep in mind, I never believed there was a “God” or “Jesus” or whatever else. When I went to those boring religion classes, I was always dreaming with my eyes open. Same as when we started going to church a few Sundays out of the month. If anyone would've asked me what my favorite part of the service was, my answer was easy. “Leaving.”
In seventh grade, I was the schools “Atheist”. Thanks to peoples need for drama at that age. You say one thing like, “I don't know what I believe,” and next thing you know you're being called to the office about sparking up chaos.
One thing I will never understand is why atheists are questioned more than Christians. Or Catholics. Or whatever religion believes in “God”. If you tell someone you think vampires are real, they'll look at you like you said you went to space last night. To me, believing in “God” is the exact same! Why is it any different? Because there's a rule book? Church, to me, is a place where vulnerable human beings get religion forced upon them.
Before you get any ideas, this “letter” wasn't meant to persuade you to drop your beliefs. It was just a way for me to express mine and maybe help other people understand.
