Nomads and Settlers

This is one of the series of posts to address most common issue in the work place — communication.

At times, it is hard to convey what you intended to your higher ops ,when the conversation is about intangible stuff ( hardly seen ) — felt better .

Ages before the human civilization flourished to the extent what it is today , nomads had a critical role to play. They had this unique trait of curiosity and exploration for survival . They wandered into new endeavors to find summer pastures. In process they addressed new routes , cleared rocks , chop forest for places to reside and find safe pockets for their contemporaries.

You guessed it right , settlers did build around these initial settlements perfect or imperfect they were . They addressed fundamental shelters to resist intense weather conditions !. They did name the township , they brought in necessary amenities to keep things moving , pass on the legacy to the future generation and finally flourish the civilization.

I am not here to debate if nomads or settlers were critical for the civilization , however I am here to draw this analogy to a team at workplace.

A perfect team would either be a mixture of nomad and/or settlers based on what you are desiring to address !!!.

Look around you , you may find people curious to do new things , take challenges , do quick proof of concept , come in with simple solve for complex problems — categorize them as Nomads.

And there are people who try to align for growth on the incubated idea or take it to places where people can shelter upon — the settlers ( may not settle for less :).

Also would like to address cautionary on the fact that few smart Amphibians can play Nomadic or Settler role as and when required — to me they are soldiers or fighters.

Now it is interesting to look the problem with in you and within the team where you are working on. Right questions to ask is to determine if I am Nomad or Settler — What am I doing ? Does this project or work demand a Nomadic role or the Settler role play .

In my observation , Nomads generally tend to address more patents , white papers and external presence in the community . For Settlers it is perfection , resiliency , taking it to the closure ,extensive documentation for legacy and internal growth.

Now what could go wrong ?

Settlers trying to be Nomadic and Nomads trying to be Settlers ( Core Conflicts )

The forest cut during initial nomad settlement over time remains the same even when settlers dwell upon( non flourishing civilization ).

Measure scale variation — Settlers measured against nomadic trait and vice versa.

And practically the real world demand’s to play both the role at certain point in your life to keep things sinusoidal , culture thoughtfulness and mutual respect.

When the attention window and time crunch persist in this new world , at times it make sense to generalize the approach to communicate.

It is more efficient to tab on one specific aspect — Settler or Nomad in future conversation and give the audience the right indicator What is the role play about? Instead driving the conversation to identity crisis.

Wishing success to all the team players and the leaders handling the Settlers and Nomad community :) .
