I decided to make a movie about flowers that eat other flowers to survive. I spent the night dressed up as a bee, looking down from the sprawling treehouse I built for all the children I’ve vowed never to conceive in this lifetime.

The footage I’ve collected is incredible.

This, for example, is the bottom of the ocean. This is a plant shaped like my mom. This is the plant shaped like my mom, waving a fist of seaweed over her head, trying to hail a cab.

I tell her to stop. I tell her there are no cabs this deep in the ocean. I tell her we should just take the train. But she doesn’t understand me. An apology, quivering in her seaweed eyes, because her mouth is full of saltwater.

And she never learned to speak bee.
