Treason was released on Netflix on December 26, 2022. It is a crime drama of 5 episodes starring DareDevil Charlie Cox, Olga Kurylenko, and Oona Chaplin.

Plot

The story is of Adam Lawrence (Charlie Cox), deputy to the Chief of MI6 Sir Martin. After Sir Martin is hospitalized due to an attack, Adam assumes his duties as Chief. While MI6 is working to catch the attacker, Adam meets an old friend and finds out that they are involved in the attack.

Now Adam knows who attacked the Chief but still does not do anything about it. The situation gets more agitated when Adam’s family gets involved because the attackers need Adam to give them confidential information which he obviously won’t agree to.

As the story moves forward many secrets rise to the surface turning Adam’s colleagues against him suspecting him as a traitor to his country.

What Makes It a Worth-Watch?

One fact about the spy genre is that it has been here for quite a while and has taken almost 70 years to develop itself to the point where now we have got some great action-spy franchises like Tom’s Mission Impossible and Craig’s Bond.

While all these films tell us about outside-the-office fieldwork of different secret agencies by showing a great deal of action, Treason tells us about the behind-desk part of those stories, from where the orders come.

The story is pretty good but the execution makes it more promising. While keeping the story “to the point”, the Treason embraces the “Gray Area” of our society. It tells you that there are no heroes or villains in reality, just people with different agendas.

The story shows the truth about today’s manipulative system that no matter how hard you try to stay white, one day or another you are gonna have to get black and that’s when you enter the “Gray Area”.

And the best thing about the series is that it is a mini-series of 5 episodes, each of 40 minutes, so it does not waste any time on unnecessary aspects of the plot. From the very first episode it immediately gets to the point and till the end keeps it that way.

Negative-Points

In my opinion, the series doesn’t have any apparent negative points. But still, for the sake of writing a review, there are two things I would like to talk about:

1. Predictable Story

By “Predictable” I do not mean it has an overused story. What I mean is, at some point, you will expect something to happen and it’ll happen in the next 5 minutes, that’s it.

2. Zero Action-Sequences

I do not consider it as a negative point as the plot does not require unnecessary screen-shaking action sequences. But if you only look for thrill and action in spy films, then this film is not for you. You are probably gonna sleep even before the first episode ends.
