Raw honey is wonderful for our skin due to the following properties it possess;

  • It has antibacterial properties which helps in the prevention and treatment of acne.
  • It has an organic acid known as Gluconic acid which quickens shedding of dead skin cells hence leaving our face with an amazing glow.
  • It’s hygroscopic which means it can readily take and retain water from the atmosphere so when your skin is dry, honey can help absorb water from the atmosphere and remain moist. But it shouldn’t be used in dry weather as it can remove the moisture from your skin.
  • It possess a lot of antioxidants that remove free radicals. These free radicals are produced in the skin when you come in contact with dust, or stress, lack of sleep and especially the sun. These free radicals damage our skin and honey can help us get rid of them and repair our skin.

Well now that I’ve told you the benefits of honey for your skin here’s how to properly use it to treat your face.

First wash your face with normal soap to remove the surface dust and other types of dirt, then apply some honey sparingly to your face and leave for about 15–20 minutes. Your face will get stiff and that’s how you know it’s working. When it’s time, rinse off with lukewarm water and tap dry. Then moisturize with your normal moisturizer.

As stated earlier in this article honey has antibacterial properties. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the swelling of pimples. Dab raw honey on the affected area or areas and let it sit for 15–20 minutes then rinse off. If you can, apply with a cotton swab and let it sit overnight and you will wake up and notice the difference.

Honey is known to lighten skin; its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties helps to greatly reduce the presence of scars and also help repair skin. Mix a teaspoon with one teaspoon of coconut or olive oil, apply to the affected area in a circular motion for one or two minutes. Then place a hot washcloth on your skin and let it sit until it cools. Do this daily for faster result. Olive oil also has a lot of antioxidants as well as vitamin E which has anti-aging properties. This is very helpful especially because in our country we are always exposed to the harsh sun.

You can exfoliate your skin once or twice a week with a gentle scrub made with two teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon baking soda. Baking soda offers light exfoliation to the skin while honey soothes and smoothens the skin.

Remember when treating your face, use raw honey as it still contains all its natural properties. Processed honey does not contain most of its properties.
