As mentioned by Winael, fog computing is a growing trend in opposition to the cloud. In the future fog or ambient computing will require less and less access to the cloud. They will run on independent networks that connect from time to time to the cloud or the big internet only when needed. This is an inevitable trend as the costs of hardware and radio chipsets are making it affordable to embed computing, AI and a connectivity layer into everything.
