A lack of safety is widely recognised as the major barrier to people getting on their bikes. How it feels to ride a bicycle has an impact on people’s willingness to ride.
BikeSpot 2020 provided the opportunity for all Victorians to share their perceptions of cycling safety at different locations (by adding Safe or Unsafe Spots to the map via a web-based interactive map) and help develop new insights for the prioritisation of cycling safety improvements.
BikeSpot 2020 was developed by CrowdSpot in close collaboration with the Amy Gillett Foundation and 12 official Government project partners.
The map was open for submissions (spot, comments or ‘likes’) for 2 months between 31 March — 31 May 2020. …
Off the back of important research in 2016 that found that one-third of young women don’t feel safe at night in public spaces, this 2018 project follows the success of the 2016 Free to Be Melbourne pilot, which explored safety-related experiences and perceptions of safety in the city.
In total, over 20,000 data points were collected across the 5 cities. All of the stories collected can be viewed via an interactive archive map for each city. …
We’ve crunched the WalkSpot data and found that a lack of pedestrian crossings and safe places to cross the street are the top concerns for pedestrians in Melbourne.
Victoria Walks, CrowdSpot and 15 government partners asked the people of Melbourne to record their walking safety concerns through an interactive online WalkSpot map. There was an overwhelming response to the project with over 1,650 people marking their perception of walking safety and generating close to 9,000 ‘engagements’ overall.
Other issues of concern identified by walkers included drivers failing to give way when turning, traffic moving too fast, problems with footpaths, and traffic light issues like a long wait for the green man or lights not allowing enough time to cross. …
WalkSpot, our recently launched collaboration with Victoria Walks to explore perceptions of walking safety and amenity, has seen overwhelming community participation with people submitting hundreds of safe and unsafe walking locations across Metropolitan Melbourne. With the project map set to close on 28 April, we are approaching 2,000 spots.

The program concluded a couple of weeks ago with a pitch night at LAB 14 within the University of Melbourne precinct. 8 fantastic teams were set the challenge give a 3 minute pitch to a 4 personal judging panel and packed out room.
We were thrilled to be announced the inaugural winner of the MAP Innovation Prize. This means that our three person (Anthony, Finn and Ben) team will be heading to Turin, Italy in July to compete at the European Innovation Academy (EIA). EIA is known as an ‘Extreme Entrepreneurship Program’, that aims to help businesses scale or take ideas to tech start-ups in 15 days. Exciting times ahead!
We were recently thrilled to be awarded a Commendation for our work on the BikeSpot project at the Victorian Planning Institute of Australia awards. The BikeSpot project explored differences in the perception of riding at locations across Melbourne compared VicRoads CrashStats. All the awards winners can be viewed in the eBook.

At the start of 2015, the City of Melbourne approached us to help engage the local community in the development of their Draft Bicycle Plan 2016–2020. This was an exciting proposition at the time as conducting projects like this one was the reason for creating CrowdSpot.
Starting with a blank map, the project gave citizens the opportunity to add their ideas, issues and ‘likes’ directly on the interactive map below. We designed the base-map to include different types of bike lanes, bike parking and the Council Boundary.
Participants not only had the ability to add ‘Spots’ to the map but also the ability to add ‘Supports’ (votes) and Comments on Spots added by other users. …
